Reducing your premium

All sorts of factors come into play when calculating your premium, which will be based on the highest risk driver on the policy. Most important are:

• Age, with males under-25 attracting the highest premiums
• Experience and driving record
• Type of car and its value
• Address
• Job or profession
• Security devices fitted to the car

Some insurers take lifestyle factors into account: marital status, credit worthiness, home-ownership and even whether you smoke will affect your premium. Don't lie and don't omit any essential details. The insurer can refuse to meet the claim if information you supply is not complete or accurate.

To minimise the premium:

• Only insure drivers who will use the car frequently
  
  
• Don't get nicked: A single speeding offence should make no difference, but more than three penalty points or a more serious conviction certainly will

• A No Claims Bonus (NCB) is crucial. Six claim-free years can cut 70% from the premium. A Protected NCB enables protects the discount but costs around 15% extra
